I see the whole system rather than only the identified problem, bringing a discerning approach to how behavior, mental health, fear, and obligation shape decisions and relationships.

About Jaclyn Ghamar, Psy.D.

I am a New York based licensed psychologist working at the point where emotional life, family systems, and structural decisions converge.

People often seek me out when situations feel tangled, high-stakes, or difficult to navigate alone. I am drawn to moments when clarity has been clouded by urgency or obligation and decisions feel charged or destabilizing. My work centers on restoring balance within the system, clarifying what has been avoided or misunderstood, and helping people move forward in ways that are grounded, realistic, and sustainable.

I bring over fifteen years of experience working with individuals, families, and high-pressure systems across clinical, school, forensic, medical, and community settings.

This experience has shaped how I see situations in context rather than isolation and how I hold multiple perspectives at once. Years of collaboration with psychiatrists, physicians, educators, attorneys, trustees, and other professionals involved in care and long-term planning have strengthened my ability to translate emotional experience into practical action without losing its meaning.

A central focus of my work is behavior within interdependent systems.

I pay close attention to function, to the conditions under which escalation occurs, and to the patterns that repeatedly derail progress. I notice when care becomes reactive and attempts to help intensify instability. From this lens, I work toward stability, predictability, and structures that reduce strain rather than amplify it.

My work

Much of my work centers on how people attempt to live meaningful lives under the weight of psychiatric illness, family history, and expectation. I consider how identity, capacity, and responsibility shift when mental illness enters a family system and how fear or guilt begin shaping decisions.I look closely at the ways support can unintentionally sustain unhelpful patterns and what it takes to interrupt reactivity before it escalates..

I bring this same lens to situations where emotional vulnerability intersects with financial and legal structures. I consider how power, obligation, fear, and responsibility influence both the expression of mental illness and the decisions made around it. This lens allows me to recognize patterns that are often missed and to maintain sound judgment when stakes are high and margins are small.

Beyond traditional therapy, my work has included parent consultation, care coordination, and high touch case management, particularly when standard treatment models proved insufficient. These experiences continue to shape how I think about systems, accountability, and what families need to move forward rather than remain caught in cycles of crisis and repair.

My Background

My background in forensic psychology and research on fairness, responsibility, and psychopathy informs how I think about accountability, manipulation, risk, and capacity. I distinguish carefully between behavior driven by illness and behavior driven by choice, and I help families respond in ways that are compassionate without becoming enabling.

Across all settings, I bring a calm and grounded presence.

I work deliberately, with attention to nuance and consequence. People often describe feeling less overwhelmed, more oriented, and better able to think in a more measured way after our work together. My aim is not to impose answers, but to help the system settle so people can respond thoughtfully rather than reactively.
